Tracking

MileSprout isn't logging my drives

Automatic tracking needs two things switched on in your iPhone's Settings app, under Settings → MileSprout:

  1. Location → Always, with Precise Location on. "While Using" isn't enough: iOS only lets MileSprout notice a drive starting when location is set to Always.
  2. Motion & Fitness on. This lets MileSprout tell driving from walking.

Also check that Background App Refresh is on for MileSprout. Low Power Mode can delay drives being noticed. If the app shows a tracking warning on the home screen, tap it and it'll take you to the right setting.

Missed a drive? Add it by hand with the + button on the Drives tab.

Will it drain my battery?

GPS only runs while you're driving. When you're parked, MileSprout waits quietly for you to move off.

What's the shift card on my Lock Screen?

That's MileSprout's Live Activity. While you're on shift it shows your shift time, miles and what they're worth on the Lock Screen and in the Dynamic Island, and on iOS 17 or later you can end the shift from it.

Don't want it? In the app, go to Settings → Your driving and turn off Show shift on lock screen. It needs iOS 16.2 or later.

Your trips

How do I change a trip between Work and Personal?

In the trip list, swipe a drive right for Work or left for Personal, or use the Work and Personal buttons under it. To change one you've already sorted, tap the trip to open it and pick the other option at the top. Only Work miles count towards your claim.

Changes after the fact are kept in the trip's history, so your log shows which trips were recorded while driving and which were edited later.

How do I export my mileage log?

Exports are part of MileSprout Pro. Open Export report on the home screen (or the Reports screen) to make a PDF mileage report, a spreadsheet or CSV, or files for Xero, QuickBooks or FreeAgent, and send them to yourself or your accountant.

Without Pro your full record is still kept, every drive, and you can see your totals on screen. If you subscribe later, all your past trips are there to export.

New phone, backups and Pro

How do I get my trips onto a new iPhone?

If you're signed in to iCloud, MileSprout backs up your trips to your own iCloud by itself, encrypted. You can check when it last did in the app under Settings → Backup & data.

  1. On the new iPhone, sign in with the same Apple Account, with iCloud Drive and iCloud Keychain (Passwords & Keychain) on.
  2. Install MileSprout. The first screen offers Restore your trips from iCloud. Tap Restore my trips.
  3. Set up automatic tracking again: location permission is per phone.

If it says the key hasn't arrived yet, give iCloud Keychain a minute to catch up and try again. Restoring your whole iPhone from an iCloud or computer backup works too.

How do I cancel my Pro subscription?

Subscriptions are handled by Apple, so you cancel them there: open the Settings app, tap your name → Subscriptions → MileSprout Pro, then Cancel Subscription. You keep Pro until the end of the period you've paid for. Your trips stay either way.

For a refund, ask Apple at reportaproblem.apple.com. We can't see or change your payment.

I've got a new phone. How do I get Pro back?

Sign in with the same Apple Account and open the Pro screen in the app; it checks your subscription with the App Store. If it doesn't show straight away, tap Restore purchases there.

Privacy and your data

Where is my data stored?

On your iPhone, in an encrypted database, plus encrypted backups in your own iCloud. There's no MileSprout account and we never receive your trips or location. The privacy policy has the details.

How do I delete my data?
  • One trip: open it and tap Delete trip, or swipe it in the list.
  • Everything on your phone: delete the MileSprout app. Its database goes with it.
  • iCloud backups: in the Settings app, go to your name → iCloud → Manage Account Storage → MileSprout and delete the data there.

We don't hold a copy, so there's nothing to delete on our side. Deleting is permanent: export anything you need for your tax return first.

Is this tax advice?

No. MileSprout works out your claim at your tax office's published mileage rates (HMRC, IRS, CRA or ATO) and keeps the record they ask for. Check with an accountant or your tax office if you're not sure what you can claim.

Still stuck?

Email [email protected]. It helps to say which iPhone and iOS version you have. Please don't send screenshots of your trips unless we ask: they show where you've been.
